Miss Pakistan Roma Riaz’s bold response to colorism goes viral across South Asia

Pakistan’s representative for the upcoming Miss Universe pageant, Roma Riaz, has recently found herself at the center of social media discussions over her skin tone. Despite facing criticism and colorist remarks online, Roma has responded with pride and confidence, saying that her complexion represents the real identity of Pakistan — “the color of this very soil.”

In a heartfelt video message posted on her Instagram, Roma said,

“My skin is the color of Pakistan’s earth — the same hue that built our homes, nurtured our families, and held the love of our mothers. To everyone who has ever been told they are too dark, too bold, or too different — remember, you too represent Pakistan.”

Addressing the issue of colorism, Roma noted that it remains deeply rooted in many societies.

“Colorism has taught us to celebrate lighter skin while making us forget where we truly come from. But I stand for a new generation of South Asian women who no longer believe in narrow definitions of beauty,” she said.

Roma emphasized that one should never apologize for their ethnic identity.

“I am Pakistani — in my roots, my values, and in every shade of my skin,” she declared.

Sharing her personal view on beauty, Roma added,

“Beauty is not confined to a particular skin tone or feature. It is a reflection of diversity, confidence, and humanity.”

Delivering a message in Urdu to her critics, Roma called for unity and positivity.

“We must learn to be better. Because if we cannot love our own people, then representation loses its meaning,” she concluded.

Roma Riaz’s bold response has sparked conversations across South Asia, with many praising her for standing up against colorism and celebrating authentic South Asian identity.
